Application of synthetic thickeners in cement coatings: The key to optimizing performance and enhancing user experience
Cement paint, with its excellent durability, adhesion, and cost-effectiveness, has become a common choice for the protection and decoration of interior and exterior walls of buildings. However, the suspension system formed by mixing its core component, cement, with water, exhibits poor stability, tends to stratify, and is prone to sagging and splashing during application. The introduction of synthetic thickeners, like injecting a "source of stability" into cement paint, effectively overcomes these defects, significantly enhancing the production, storage, and application performance of the paint, making it an indispensable auxiliary agent for modern high-performance cement paint.
Mainstream synthetic thickeners and their characteristics in cement coatings**
1. Cellulose ethers (such as HEC, HMHEC):
Representative products: Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC), Hydrophobic Modified Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HMHEC).
Mechanism of action: The hydrophilic groups of the molecular chain form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, dissolve and swell to form a spatial network structure for thickening, and belong to non associative thickeners.
Characteristics in cement coatings:
High thickening efficiency: Especially at low to medium shear rates, the thickening effect is significant.
Excellent water retention: It is crucial for delaying cement hydration and preventing cracking due to rapid drying.
Good construction feel: Provides excellent lubrication.
Limitations: Relatively weak alkali resistance, long-term exposure to high alkaline cement environment may result in molecular chain degradation, and viscosity may decrease over time; Susceptible to microbial erosion; The glossiness of the coating is slightly reduced.
2. Polyacrylic Acid (Alkali Swelling ASE, Hydrophobic Modified Alkali Swelling HASE):
Representative products: alkali swelling lotion (ASE), hydrophobic modified alkali swelling lotion (HASE).
Action mechanism: The acid lotion is added, the carboxyl group is ionized in the alkaline environment of the paint (pH>7), and the molecular chains are extended and intertwined to thicken (ASE). HASE further generates intermolecular association under the action of hydrophobic groups, resulting in better thickening efficiency and rheological properties.
Characteristics in cement coatings:
High cost-effectiveness: Thickening efficiency is usually better than cellulose ether.
Excellent anti sagging performance: Provides excellent medium to low shear viscosity.
Good water retention: inferior to cellulose ether but usually meets the requirements.
Good resistance to biodegradation.
Limitations: pH sensitive, requiring the system to have sufficient alkalinity; Excessive use may affect water resistance; The increase in high shear viscosity is limited.
